COVID-19 Update

We know everyone is waiting for information about what is going on now that schools have been closed until March 30th.  Things are very fluid and decisions are trying to be made.  There are a lot of moving parts to this.

DO NOT COPY OR SHARE THIS!!!  IF NEED BE, WE WILL UPDATE THIS POST.
If you copy or share it, you may be distributing old information.

Below is information regarding pay, benefits, who is required to report to work, and obtaining critical
items left in the buildings during the closure.

1. Who Reports to Work: No one is to report to work unless you have been contacted by Dr.
Asplund or Mrs. Hamm and identified as essential personnel. We will need the building nurses
to report to their buildings from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM on Monday.

2. Pay: All regular employees will continue to be paid during the leave unless you are on an
approved unpaid leave. You do not need to submit timesheets. Hourly workers will be paid for
their scheduled times and salaried employees will receive their normal paychecks. You will
receive your next paycheck on March 27th.

3. Insurance: If you have insurance through District #205, none of your benefits will change.
4. Access to Buildings: Staff will not have access to any District buildings or facilities through
March 30th unless identified as essential personnel.

5. Retrieval of “Critical Items” from the Buildings: If you have a medication or critical item you
need from a building, please email your principal by Sunday, March 15th by 12:00 PM (noon).
Principals will retrieve those items from your rooms and they will be available for pickup on
Monday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Please include the location of these items in your rooms
so that principals can quickly retrieve them. Please pull up in your car to the main entrance of
the building, unless you are an employee of Lombard. Lombard employees will need to walk up
to the main entrance, but will not be permitted into the building.

6. Activity Account Requests: Central Office will not be processing any activity account requests
until further notice.

7. Facility Use Agreements/ Field Trip Requests: Central Office will not be processing any of these
requests until further notice.

8. Initial Case Study Requests for Special Education: Do not email the special education
coordinators or director with requests for initial case studies until schools reopen. They are
inundated with holding telephone IEP meetings that are still required to continue (as of today)
by ISBE.

THE LANE EVANS 2019 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE FORUM
Creating a Winning Coalition Through Progressive Populist Values

The Lane Evans 2019 Presidential Candidate Forum is sponsored by the Lane Evans Progressive Populist Project, which aims to inspire a renewed commitment to authentic, values-based progressive leadership. The career and legacy of the late Lane Evans, who represented the 17th Congressional District of Illinois from 1983-2007, offers an example of authentic populist leadership grounded in progressive values that won the support of voters across the political spectrum.  His politics forged a winning coalition across lines of race and gender and spanned the urban-rural divide.

Lane won and held his congressional seat through 12 consecutive elections, despite its having been represented by Republicans for nearly all of the preceding century. More importantly, Lane’s congressional career inspired a generation of Democrats in Illinois and Vietnam veterans nationwide. Recognizing a kinship in Barack Obama’s “politics of hope,” Lane was an early supporter of Obama’s campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2004.

Lane Evans’ political success in America’s heartland as a working-class progressive in the Midwest populist tradition stands in sharp contrast to the divisiveness and nativism that is now paraded as “populism.” Lane’s brand of inclusive populism illuminates a path for a new generation eager to confront today’s cynical politics of division.

WHAT:  All interested presidential candidates will be invited to participate in the forum, which will honor and promote the legacy of Lane Evans (D-IL) as a champion of working people and veterans. The Forum will enable candidates to offer ideas to attract working Americans to their banner, promote progressive ideas, and engage voters in the critical early nominating states.

WHEN:  Saturday, October 19, 2019

WHERE:  Augustana College, Rock Island IL (Quad-Cities, Iowa/Illinois)

FORMAT: Friday afternoon/evening and Saturday afternoon candidate forum

    • Friday Panel & Audience Discussion:  Progressive populism and support for working families in the Lane Evans tradition.
    • Friday Evening:  “Friends of Lane Evans” and forum participants gather in honor of Lane and populism. Side interviews for sharing memories/stories about Lane will be conducted with attendees throughout the evening, to be included in an educational video/documentary and on social media.

  • Saturday Morning: The keys to Lane Evans’ success. History of populism in the Midwest. Presentations on issues of the day to discuss later with candidates.

  • Saturday Afternoon: A welcome keynote followed by a moderated forum involving declared candidates for the 2020 presidential nomination. The focus will be a discussion of policies to help veterans and America’s struggling working families. This could include issues such as childcare assistance, pay equity and anti-harassment measures, education, strengthening unions, healthcare access, pensions and retirement, and other challenges facing working people and retirees.

A minor change in school calendar is going to be announced…

A minor change in school calendar is going to be announced…

The GEA was asked to and did approve a Memo of Understanding for a one time occasion.

August 21st will be a FULL DAY of school do to the Solar Eclipse and the many events that “teachers” have planned for this particular day.

In exchange, we will have an early out on the 8th day of school (Aug 24th?). The hour of early dismissal time will be reserved for TEACHER WORK TIME.. If the 21st happens to be out early due to heat staff will be able to leave 10 mins after students are dismissed.

2017 School Board Election

GEA Members: I have been directed to share the results of the GEA Candidate Forum. Of those present, the top candidates were Rod Scherpe and Vickie Banks. Both received ratings higher than 85% from the members attending the forum.

The GEA is choosing not to officially endorse candidates for this election because, in part, viable candidates were not able to attend.

Some members have expressed concern about splitting the votes by voting for other candidates.  This could lead to a candidate less favorable being elected.  Additionally, some have expressed concern for voting for candidates and giving them a false sense of an approved mandate when they are actually uncontested.

Make a difference.  With an expected moderate turnout EVERY vote will be needed.  Vote!!

2016 Election

Hi

As you may know, the Galesburg Education Association along with the Illinois Education Association has voted to give our support to Bill Butts for the upcoming election on Nov. 8th. Pam Davidson, the Knox County Democratic Chair has contacted us to ask for our help. They need volunteers for Sat. and Sun. from 9:30 to approximately 3:00. If you could help for even two hours it would be greatly appreciated. Lunch will be provided at around 12:00. They are expecting Cheri Bustos, Bill Butts and possibly other representative to be there. It is my understanding that the GEA family and friends are needed to help canvass the Knoxville area. Volunteers will have a quick training around 9:30. It will be a set of simple instructions. Volunteers will be allowed to work in groups or alone. The address for us to meet is 323 E Main St. in Galesburg. This is the Knox County Democrats Headquarters. I know this is a short notice but it is our opportunity to help elect someone that is a strong supporter for the GEA. Bill Butts stood behind us during the strike.  Mr. Butts is a strong supporter of unions. If you can please help, all you have to do is show up at the headquarters around 9:30. You can call me if you have questions. I plan on being there by 9:30 tomorrow morning. I hope to have several of you there with me to show that the G.E.A. stands behind those that stand up for us.
